- Providers send upstream calls with a driver-owned `upstreamSignal` instead of the caller's `abortSignal`. A disconnect detaches the chat stream: output stops, the provider keeps reading until the upstream reports usage, and that usage is metered. - A detached stream gets SDK_TIMEOUT_MS to finish. After that the driver aborts the upstream, and the stream is metered like any other stream that ends without usage. - The disconnect check also runs right before dispatch. - The OpenAI stream handlers report usage that arrived before an abort. - Docs: stopping a stream stops the output, and a request that reached the model is billed in full. Detached streams get 10 more minutes.
