* fix(native): report unidentified text plists as unknown
Require explicit XML identification in file output instead of treating all
text as XML. Preserve decoded plist values and source-format provenance
when plutil falls back to XML conversion.
Add provider-boundary regressions and real macOS CLI controls for OpenStep,
data-bearing OpenStep, XML, UTF-16 XML and binary property lists.
Fixes#4294
* fix(native): keep XML plists without a declaration labeled xml
`file -b` names XML only when a document declaration is present, so the
narrowed `\bXML\b` check reported a declaration-less XML plist as unknown and
broke the real-plutil `decodes xml plists that plutil cannot express as JSON`
CLI test. When `file` reports only text, read the source head once and label it
XML only when its first non-whitespace character (after a UTF-8 BOM) is `<`;
OpenStep and other text stay unknown.

* fix(native): distinguish OpenStep data from XML source markup
Recognize XML markup instead of treating every leading angle bracket as XML.
Keep data-only OpenStep sources unknown, honor explicit JSON identification,
and decode BOM-marked UTF-16 prefixes before detecting declarationless XML.
Add source-format regressions and macOS CLI cases for data-only sources.

Record cancellation at file checkpoints and before owner handoff. Keep physical hash failures, exact reasons, completed facts and failed-close owners distinct through artifact and provider projections and cleanup retries.
Refs #4598. Validated with 566 passing affected tests and 22 platform skips; final Kuna cleanup reason rerun passed 43 tests. No Android device or real JADX/Kuna execution claimed.
Allow the composed one-shot dispatch workflow to open a covered Mach-O
without selecting a deep provider. The registry still owns selector
precedence; explicit request/environment choices remain binding, while
non-Mach-O and unsupported hosts retain deep symbol fallback. Requested
snapshots keep ordinary binding and profile semantics.
Share runtime composition and target admission with the native byte reader.
Keep target parsing, resource ownership and Evidence on the original session.
Validation: 13 focused files, 192 passed and 2 skipped; npm run check passed.
The six previously blocked native property CLI controls now pass. Ten measured
CLI workflows preserved exact metadata facts; warm raw reply token medians
1344/927, elapsed .475/.547s, CPU .691/.745s, sampled family RSS351.2/359.3MiB
baseline/candidate. Baseline used explicit Ghidra workaround; true cold and
full-agent costs unmeasured. No speed/memory improvement or Windows claim.

Retain producer-owned compiler output and cleanup markers through xcrun
resolution and native failure projection. Keep physical preparation failures
primary and preserve separate command deadline classification for interrupted
preparation. Omitted output facts stay unknown; client close does not resolve
foreign helper cleanup. Include CLI failure output in native regression reports.
Validation: 87 focused tests passed. Broader 140-file run passed 1483 tests,
skipped 109, and exposed three pre-existing deep-provider selection failures
tracked in #4555. Static checks passed. Compiler faults use controlled Node
fixtures; native Swift compiler faults and Windows execution were not verified.
Other command consumers still need preparation-fact propagation.
inspect_plist rooted every file target at the file's own directory, so a
program file under App.app/Contents/MacOS defaulted to
Contents/MacOS/Contents/Info.plist and --relative-path resolved from MacOS/
instead of the app root the CLI documents. A selected plist file likewise
looked for <dir>/Contents/Info.plist instead of reading itself.
A program file directly under a bundle's Contents/MacOS now roots at that
bundle, and a plist artifact target is its own default plist. The missing
default message names the default plist rather than Contents/Info.plist.

* fix(native): bound captured output carried by native command failures
The native command runner retains up to 64 MiB of output because
successful analysis needs it complete, and failureCapture copied all of
it into the failure. An inspect_plist whose plutil output exceeded the
budget therefore returned a 67 MB resource_constraint error whose
details.captured_output.stdout repeated the whole retained output.
Keep a 64 KiB UTF-8-safe excerpt per stream in failure diagnostics,
mark them truncated, and keep the observed stdout/stderr byte totals.
Successful captures are unchanged.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(native): bound codesign failures and cover excerpt cuts
translateCodeSignExitFailure wrapped an accepted nonzero codesign capture
into a NativeCommandFailure by copying both complete streams, so
inspect_signature failures still bypassed the diagnostic bound. Route it
through the shared failureCapture builder; accepted output stays
complete until the provider decides it is a failure.
Add a focused runner test for an ordinary nonzero exit with stdout and
stderr just above the excerpt size and a two-byte character straddling
the cut, and a provider test for the codesign path.

* test(native): build excerpt test output inside the child process
The output strings embedded in one node -e argument totalled about 133
KB, above Linux's 128 KiB per-argument limit, so spawn failed with E2BIG
on the CI runner. Generate the repeated output in the child instead.

* fix(native): refuse inspect_signature on non-Mach-O targets
This provider's signature inspection covers Mach-O code signatures only.
On a xar pkg, codesign's "code object is not signed" verdict cannot see
the archive-level signature layer, so a signed or invalidly-signed package
was reported as signed:false with "Artifact is not signed." Match the
existing inspect_macho/list_architectures gate and report
capability_unavailable instead of an unsigned claim for a layer that was
never evaluated.

* fix(native): keep lipo path echoes out of FAT records
Parse FAT records only after separating the exact echoed operand path. Pass the same lipo operand at all three consumers and cover multiline paths through parser, slice-reader and compiled CLI regressions.
* fix(native): use parsed lipo framing for container offsets
* test(native): use explicit FAT fixtures for CLI regressions
* fix(native): name the ownership helper prerequisite in command failures
Every supervised native command launch needs the Darwin process-ownership
helper. When that helper cannot be compiled (relative REA_DARWIN_SWIFTC_PATH,
missing SDKROOT, a missing compiler, or an SDK/compiler mismatch), the
runner reduced the typed DarwinProcessOwnershipInspectionError to a bare
`io` failure. inspect_macho then reported `execution_failure` with no hint,
and inspect_artifact on any universal Mach-O said only "lipo could not
enumerate universal Mach-O slices".
The runner now keeps the inspection message as the failure's `detail` at
the launch boundary and carries it through xcrun resolution. The native
provider adds it to its diagnostics and the slice reader appends it to its
message, matching what the SQLite and capture providers already report.

Use the shared resource scope and private runtime root for signature snapshots. Retain failed file-handle/root cleanup, preserve primary failures alongside cleanup diagnostics, and wait for binding operations during client close before retrying owned resources.
Validate root cleanup failure, blocked retry, repeated client close and in-flight acquisition. Existing provider/MCP/CLI tests and the real Darwin codesign ancestor-swap case pass. Dedicated native file-handle close-failure injection remains unverified.
Keep FAT container format distinct from selected slice architecture through target admission, Evidence, snapshots, and CLI/MCP lifecycle results. Preserve native, Hopper, Ghidra, extraction, and dylib routing for the Mach-O family.
Reject selected FAT ranges overlapping their table or too short for a Mach-O header. Replace empty-slice fixtures with in-bounds executable headers and cover thin, universal, single-slice, FAT64, and swapped containers.
Validation: static and architecture checks, generated docs, targeted producer and public MCP tests. Provider routing uses controlled fixtures; no live Hopper, IDA, JADX, or Ghidra analysis was performed for this change.
Retain failed native command owners through both xcrun resolution and command capture. Retry all owned cleanup failures before new commands and after consumers join their launched work at close; preserve partial output and every resource diagnostic.
Refs #740.
inspect_macho, inspect_signature, inspect_plist, list_architectures and
demangle_swift already return their command provenance inside the
normalized result. The provider also copied the same array into
raw_result, so every response carried it twice. raw_result now stays
null, as docs/mcp-contracts.md describes for results without a distinct
provider representation.

list_architectures ran lipo on every admitted target. For a PE DLL, ELF
binary or plist, lipo's refusal surfaced as execution_failure with
"Retry once; if it continues, run rea doctor", which neither can fix.
Refuse non-Mach-O targets as capability_unavailable before running
lipo, as inspect_macho already does.

Deliver complete Evidence directly through MCP with required nullable analysis profiles and immutable per-server delivery settings. Bind selected environments at construction and require typed cleanup outcomes with retained retry ownership.
Remove test-only routing, duplicate session and snapshot metadata, producer-field repairs, and ambiguous provider arguments. Separate artifact byte identity from occurrence classification and retain typed source-map and partial native facts across CLI, MCP, and verifier consumers.
BREAKING CHANGE: obsolete Evidence envelopes, session aliases, incomplete snapshots, and missing normalized producer facts are no longer accepted.
rea inspect-plist takes the target as its positional path and selects a
plist with --relative-path, so "Pass path" pointed CLI callers at the
wrong argument. Name the MCP path input and the CLI flag.

inspect_plist on a target without a readable default Contents/Info.plist
(for example a bare Mach-O) reported the generic "This analysis is
unavailable for the current target. Choose another analysis or target."
as message and remediation. The specific reason, including "Pass path to
inspect another plist", appeared only in details.reason, although
selecting another plist in the same target is the available workflow.
Pass that reason as the refusal's user message.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Host and tool-configuration refusals from the pwntools, EVMole, firmware,
mitmproxy, Wakaru, LLDB and xcrun adapters carried no userMessage, so CLI
and MCP callers saw the generic "This analysis is unavailable for the
current target. Choose another analysis or target." as both message and
remediation. Choosing another target cannot satisfy a Linux-only profile
or an unset REA_*_COMMAND. The actual requirement appeared only in
details.reason.
Pass each refusal's reason as its userMessage, as the adapters' other
configuration refusals (EVMole limits, JADX, pwndbg) already do.

Follow #973's native ownership: the call-observation schemas move to
src/domain/native/, and the contract now lives in src/contracts/native/.

Add observe_native_calls (CLI: observe-native-calls <path> <input-json>). It
launches the active Mach-O as an owned process under `lldb --batch`, stops at
caller-selected functions or Objective-C methods, records each entry and
auto-continues:
- thread, image, symbol, load and file address;
- raw integer argument registers and optional caller frames;
- for methods, the selector read from _cmd and the receiver's dynamic class,
from LLDB's runtime reader without running target code.
No expression is evaluated and no existing process is attached. The run ends
on exit, max_events or duration_ms; REA then kills the process and confirms
that it is gone. The result also carries exit status, bounded stdout/stderr,
breakpoint resolution with partial coverage for unresolved requests, and
limitations. A target LLDB may not debug fails with a debugger-attach-denied
reason and remediation.
verify:native-calls checks the tool through the CLI and stdio MCP against a
compiled fixture, compares breakpoint addresses with nm, exercises every
outcome, and checks hardened-runtime targets with and without get-task-allow.

- Carry the Info.plist that declared the program file on the target as
bundleInfoPlist, so inspect_plist defaults to it even when the program
file is a symlink into another bundle directory.
- Accept a readable Info.plist symlink, as reading the plist directly did.
- Treat only a missing path as an absent layout or wrapper; a permission
denial now reaches the resolver's permission-denied classification.

Every native command rejected an iOS app installed on an Apple silicon
Mac, such as /Applications/Stash.app, with "app has no readable
CFBundleExecutable": the resolver understood only the macOS layout,
Contents/Info.plist with Contents/MacOS/<executable>. iOS-style bundles,
including those extracted from an IPA, keep Info.plist and the program
file at the bundle root, and an iOS-on-Mac wrapper holds that bundle in
Wrapper/<Name>.app.
Bundle resolution moves to AppBundleExecutable and accepts the macOS
layout, then the flat layout, then a wrapper's single real Wrapper/*.app
directory. The WrappedBundle symlink is never followed, and the program
file must stay inside its bundle. inspect_plist defaults to the Info.plist
beside the program file when the bundle has no Contents/Info.plist.

#885 decodes XML plists that contain a __proto__ key by omitting those
entries, but signature entitlements and Interface Builder plists dropped
the omission count. inspect_signature returned an entitlement set that
looked complete, and archive_decode stayed complete. Both now report the
omission: a signature limitation, and a partial archive_decode facet with
reason dictionary_entries_omitted and a per-document limitation.
The placeholder that stands in for __proto__ was reserved against the raw
XML text, so an entity-encoded key such as __rea_prototype_key__
decoded to the placeholder and was omitted as if it were __proto__. The
placeholder is now reserved against the decoded text.

The `plist` XML decoder throws on the legal dictionary key `__proto__`
(its CVE-2022-22912 guard). An app whose XML Info.plist held such an
entry could not be opened at all ("app has no readable
CFBundleExecutable"), and entitlements, XML keyed archives, and
Interface Builder plists failed the same way. On the plutil JSON route,
validation silently dropped the key from `inspect_plist` results.
Decode XML plists through a shared reader that substitutes such keys
before the decoder runs, then omits and counts those entries.
`inspect_plist` and `inspect_keyed_archive` report the omission as a
limitation instead of failing or dropping it silently.

A regular plist that the host refuses to open made both plutil
conversions fail, which was reported as an undecodable property list.
Open the file before running plutil and report EACCES/EPERM as a
target access failure naming the path.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`inspect_plist` turned a missing selected plist, a directory, or a file
that is not a property list into a generic execution failure that
advised retrying and running `rea doctor`. A bare Mach-O without
Contents/Info.plist failed the same way.
Check the resolved path before running plutil and keep plutil's decode
diagnostic. A caller-selected path now fails as invalid input naming
the path and the reason; a missing default Info.plist is unavailable for
the target. The CLI no longer sends Contents/Info.plist as an explicit
selection, so its default matches the MCP default.

`swift-demangle` parsed a symbol beginning with `-` as an option, so
`-help` replaced the results with usage text and the call failed as
unreadable output. A symbol containing a line feed split into extra
output records, and the CRLF-tolerant parser stripped a carriage return
that belonged to the final symbol.
Pass the symbols after `--`, split records on the LF the demangler
emits, and reject multi-line symbols in the shared CLI/MCP input schema.

codesign echoes the executable path and signing identifier verbatim,
and an ad hoc identifier derives from the file name. A file name with
line breaks added forged Authority lines, a signed file named after
codesign's unsigned message was reported unsigned, and path text could
supply entitlements. Parse display fields after the exact echoed path
and identifier, classify unsigned output by exit status, and read
requirements and entitlements from stdout.

plutil's JSON spells an integral <real> such as 9007199254740992 like an
<integer>, so the JSON path labeled it an exact integer. When the JSON
holds an unsafe integral number, read element types from plutil's XML
conversion; numbers whose origin stays ambiguous are reported as decoded
with an explicit limitation.
Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`inspect_plist` converted every plist with `plutil -convert json`, which
rejects plists containing `<data>`, `<date>`, or non-finite `<real>`
values. Such valid plists (including Stocks.app's Info.plist) failed with
a cause-free `execution_failure`.
When the JSON conversion exits nonzero, decode `plutil -convert xml1`
instead. Data and dates use the `$plist_type` objects the keyed-archive
reader already emits; non-finite reals become an explicit unknown because
the XML decoder reports NaN and infinity alike. Provenance records both
conversions and limitations explain the representation. Plists that JSON
can express keep the unchanged single-conversion path.
The projection moves to `src/domain/plistValue.ts` and is shared with the
keyed-archive reader, which keeps rejecting non-finite reals.

all local compareCodePoints/compareText/digestCanonical duplicates
and migrate every importer. No re-export shims.
* fix(ci): allow slower real browser startup
* chore(config): remove dead eslint, dedupe scripts, cacheable turbo tasks
Delete eslint.config.js (oxlint is the linter), drop lint:dead alias,
pin smol-toml, fold jscpd/scan:todos into check:pr, make test:run
cacheable, align oxlint ignores.
* fix(config): hash all test inputs for cached runs
* docs: fix architecture diagram and pretty-print tool catalog
Drop dangling REPLAY edges, add dotnet/reference/error/evaluation
nodes. Emit 2-space JSON from the catalog generator and regenerate.
* test: extract shared fixtures, drop knip carve-outs
Dedupe android/apple session tests, bundler adapter headers, and
reconstruction helpers into tests/support fixtures. Delete unused
type aliases and the knip ignoreIssues block. Lower jscpd threshold
2.7 to 2.5.
* refactor(app): split Setup and ProcessOwnership modules
Extract SetupTypes/SetupHost from Setup.ts and move observation
helpers into ProcessOwnershipObservation/ProcessTree. Migrate all
importers including CLI commands. No re-export shims.
* refactor(runtime): centralize safe JSON parsing and preserve error causes
Add domain/safeJson.safeParseJson and migrate all raw JSON.parse
call sites. Name catch causes and preserve failure reasons instead
of swallowing; annotate genuine best-effort cleanup.
* fix(runtime): retain JSON parse error causes
* fix(comparisons)!: preserve unknowns across partial observations
Share absence and digest semantics, keep unobserved managed bodies unknown, and match unique managed type/name/signatures before structural fallback.
BREAKING CHANGE: Managed comparison metadata adds exact-signature matching and its count, and name_matching now reports exact-signature-fallback.
* fix(javascript): preserve projected result binding semantics
Share syntax-aware property reads and assigned-result resolution. Retain destructuring paths and downgrade downstream whole-result relationships instead of resolving nested or wrapped calls as aliases.
* fix(native)!: admit complete parser values and preserve typed failures
Decode Mach headers by named columns, validate complete slice keys and lipo alignment, and preserve codesign runtime flags and tagged parser errors. Rename the Ghidra test dossier fixture and connect fake-backed suites to real verification lanes.
BREAKING CHANGE: Native load-command results no longer contain the unused, always-null file_offset field.
* fix(process): preserve host identity and actionable boundary failures
Thread selected platform and environment through process and Doctor seams, stamp observed producer identity in Evidence, and retain PTY, filesystem, lease and lazy-provider failure causes. Drain cancelled lazy loads and omit exited descendants from verified lineage.
* fix(browser): preserve cleanup and document-transition evidence
Make V8 and Playwright teardown cancellation-aware, expose primary failures alongside incomplete cleanup, share frame-tree and navigation rules, and clear stale WebMCP registrations without pruning unrelated child frames.
* fix(adapters): align managed targets and typed CLI outcomes
Inspect managed PE/CLI targets independently of native provider selection, reuse successful managed selections, and keep evidence bound to the actual inspected target. Classify canonical CLI error envelopes and exhaustive setup/update/uninstall outcomes, audit registered CLI coverage, and assert platform-specific runtime results.
* docs: refresh boundary contracts and shipped roadmap behavior
